“My technique has ripened into
controlled improvisation.
My paintings are a spontaneous occurrence, born out of experience, but maturing reflex- ively in the process of creation. My recent work deeply expresses my feelings. Decades of painting have brought me to this point—no longer am I experimenting. More at ease with my artistic process, I do not struggle when creating.
“I feel more a part of each painting, especially since I can walk around them, work from all four sides, and literally be in the paintings. When painting, I am not aware of what I am doing. When working in my studio, I find myself in the state of flow that Csikszentmih- alyi described. Painting becomes an optimal experience. After a while, when I step back,
I actually see what I generated during these interludes of fierce, yet enjoyable, concen- tration. It is curious and amazing, yet I have no fears about making changes because the painting has a life of its own.”
