BAI’s portraits heighten the viewer’s emotional response through repre- sentation in the guise of the African mask and punctuated by color the- ory as symbolism. Although an accomplished abstract painter, he mastered realism first. He studied classical drawing in the photorealist tradition while a student at the California College of Arts and Crafts. BAI’s work forms part of the permanent collection of the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, and the Harrison Museum of African American Culture.
