In her images, Tornabene addresses physical and psychological aspects of
her own life— via a narrative often reminiscent of fairy-tales
and of symbolism as visual metaphor. A long- time professional artists’ model, she is able to play with her camera poses within the confines of her studio or in isolated outside locations. To aid in her exploration, she alternates be- tween traditional photographic materials and modern technology. Her work is influenced
by the paintings and sculptures of the Old Masters, such as Botticelli, Caravaggio, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and Rodin; in photography, Julia Margaret-Cameron, Anne Brigman, the Pictoralists, Francesca Wood- man, and Imogen Cunningham, among others. And while music plays an important role in her creative process, it is also the sounds of nature that allow her further inspiration.
