Social Media Musings – Part III My Reflections on the Practice and Life
We trial lawyers transform complexity into simplicity, the confounding into the understandable.
No matter how busy you are at your firm, if you are having unusual health symptoms, see a doctor. A bad cold, left unchecked,
can become bronchitis or pneumonia. That chest pain you attribute to stress could be a serious cardiac issue. Don’t ignore your body when it’s trying to get your attention.
Being a trial lawyer is not being surprised by the surprises.
When thinking through your cases, start with the big picture, then focus on the details. If you start with the details, you may miss the big picture.
Take care of yourself. You can work yourself sick. I’ve seen it happen. No one knows you and your limits better than you.
What I love about being a lawyer is the use of words. Words to inform, words to persuade, words to inspire, words to weep. In the midst of everything going on in our country, I can’t help but think the importance of words
in songs and how they affect us, move us and change us. And one of those songs is “Strange Fruit”. Remains powerful decades later.
During each phase of education, spend less and incur less debt. When attending college, consider a state college instead of a private one. Consider starting at a community college to save even more, and transfer into a state college. Consider attending a state law school. Before committing to a LLM
or other advanced degree, think through whether it will help your career. As a society, schools charge too much for education and we pay too much. I was blessed to go on full rides to college and law school. I could have
