Strategic Planning for Law Firms
“You’re doing this to get me in line or push me out”
Some senior or underperforming lawyers may believe the process is about them and pushing them out. It may be, and if that is true, then a problem exists, and strategic planning will help address the problem. You will need to reassure them that the process will be objective and fair and that their voices and concerns will be heard.
“You’re not going to listen to my concerns”
Some believe you won’t listen to them or their issues and concerns. They actually want to engage in strategic planning, but feel they won’t have a place at the table. When engaging in strategic planning, listen to your team and what they want changed or improved. Indeed, part of the beginning of any planning process will give attention to listening and a commitment by all to be open and fair to one another.
Other concerns
You may hear other concerns, other naysayers, other negative comments. Understand that change is hard. Many don’t embrace it. Lawyers as a group abhor change. That’s why some of us hold onto our sneakers, office chairs and briefcases too long. Be prepared to address these concerns in an empathetic and professional manner.
