Strategic Planning for Law Firms
A Firm Wide Strategic Plan
This book is focused primarily on firm wide strategic plans. But your firm may be so large, may have so many practice groups, have so many offices and so many lawyers, that you have to go beyond a firm wide plan. If so, apply what we have discussed to creating plans for individual offices, practice groups and even for individual attorneys.
A Practice Group Strategic Plan
Each of your practice groups should have their own strategic plans to secure more work and better serve their clients. The way your employment practice group develops business and serves their clients may be very different than how your insurance coverage group or your IP group does so. Each should have its own strategic plan that dovetails into the firm wide strategic plan. In fact, it is best to develop a firm wide plan before individual practice groups develop their own.
Individual Strategic Plans
Strategic planning isn’t just for companies, firms and organizations. The same approach is equally applicable to individuals who want to become experts, develop a book of business, develop a niche practice and expand their footprint in the legal community. Encourage and empower your individual attorneys to prepare their individual strategic plans. Support them with training and the money they need to be trained.
Developing a Personal Business Development Plan
In addition to a personal strategic plan, each attorney should take the time to develop their own personal business development plan, which dovetails into the firm’s overall goals in terms of the work and clients it is pursuing.
