Strategic Planning for Law Firms
   Updating Your Strategic Plan
Your strategic planning will likely need updates and upgrades, tweaks and changes. Revisit it periodically and work with your strategic planning team and firm to revise it as necessary to reflect changes in the legal sector and landscape, and changes brought upon by your clients, your cases and your team. The plan has to adapt to the changing environment, to ensure its remaining relevance and applicability.
Annual Strategic Planning Retreats
In addition to an initial strategic planning retreat, the firm should have an annual retreat to revise, change and adapt the strategic plan to address new issues, concerns and trends. Every January may be a good time to revisit and amend your strategic plan. At an annual retreat you check off what has been completed; what has not been completed; what is no longer considered important; and, any new issue that needs to be added.
Regular Strategic Planning Sessions
In addition to the yearly retreat, a quarterly or monthly luncheon to address whether the goals of thestrategicplanarebeingmet, andifnot, whynot, isvaluableandappropriate. Theseregular meetings keep everyone’s eyes on the prize.
Proper Care and Feeding of Your Strategic Plan
Strategic plans succeed if everyone involved is held accountable to achieve its goals and regular meetings and communications are held to ensure that the strategic plan is being pursued, enacted and achieved. Strategic planning is a long term process. Generating a plan is an important part of the process, but more important is enacting it, and that involves regular and proper supervision and proper care and feeding.
