Leadership
Candidate for Secretary/Treasurer Craig A. Marvinney Candidate’s Statement
 Craig A. Marvinney
Walter & Haverfield LLP Cleveland, OH
Together we stand astride the tempest. Taming it, we now must anticipate the transition into tomorrow.
Our Federation leadership has forged ahead, moving
us successfully through not one, but two existential crises in the last few years: solving
a fiscal and administrative crush through sound financial oversight and management; and dynamically piloting
us through the harshest challenge in our FDCC history, COVID-19. The
character. Leadership, inspiration, community, exceptional, vetted, and most of all, wonderful people. You, our members.
I mentioned a tempest. Reaching calmer waters requires comprehensive experience at our leadership’s pinnacle. The central concept of leadership is foresight. As noted, the ability to anticipate change so to adapt to and capitalize on it is key. Twenty plus years in working continuously for the FDCC proves I have this unique experience and ability.
Upon admission into the FDCC, members told me
of the incredible bonds they formed. My inner cynic arose, but dispelled upon learning how true they were. Who else do we visit two weeks a year by attending
the two major FDCC meetings? Think on that. That is twenty weeks in ten years. We learn together, teach, cook, dine, watch whales from catamarans, paddle cold water lakes, raft rapids, climb mountains, visit our homes, attend weddings, grieve at funerals, share courtrooms and client representation, and so much more -- together. My four daughters often joined with other FDCC kids growing up together at our Annual Meetings... Fellowship. Like none found elsewhere. Over the years these bonds, the joy of our friendships, birthed a true commitment to serve.
To work with great leaders at so many levels, on projects, programs, and panels. All deepening my learning from, love for, and commitment to the Federation and our many members. Indeed, we carry
unknowns of the economic comeback await. Our culture and profession now must build well beyond where we were just over 15 months ago. We now are poised on a new threshold of opportunity for the FDCC.
Business and professional mavens foresee our economy taking three years to recover 2019 levels in business travel, organizational attendance and engagement, and investment by law firms and corporations in the vitality of organizations such as our Federation. That takes us to 2023-2024. That year the person our Nominating Committee choses this summer as Secretary-Treasurer becomes FDCC President.
During these years, the FDCC needs to intensify its strong, agile, practical, and thoughtful leadership for the betterment of the Federation and its members. So, why do I seek to be a part of our highest leadership team in these coming years?
Our members. Knowledge, Justice, and Fellowship is our maxim. Our “Why,” developed from our Board’s Strategic Planning Meeting just weeks before COVID struck, captures the essence of the Federation’s
