FDCC Meetings - Looking Behind
U. S. Supreme Court decisions, and
succession planning.
That evening, we convened at the
South Carolina Aquarium for The
President’s Reception, the largest
social event of the meeting. With
stunning nighttime views of the
Ravenel Bridge outside and displays
of fish and ocean creatures inside,
the Aquarium provided a fun and
unique setting for our guests, as
they dined and socialized.
Attendees enjoyed a casual buffet
of Southern comfort food, while
mingling with one another and
viewing the various exhibits,
including a “Welcome FDCC” diver
in one of the massive tanks who
posed for pictures with the crowd.
The program in Charleston was
truly outstanding and included
many notable judges, legal
scholars, and practitioners, as
one expects from an FDCC event.
One of the highlights included a
presentation from former South
Carolina Governor David M.
Beasley and University of South
Carolina Law School Dean William
C. Hubbard who discussed the
global challenges of food insecurity,
climate change, and mass migration
in the context of respect for the
rule of law. Governor Beasley was
Executive Director of the World
Food Programme, a United Nations
organization that provides food
assistance worldwide and Dean
Hubbard is a past president of
the American Bar Association.
Governor Beasley captivated the
audience with his tales of working
to bring food to impoverished
people in the face of government
inaction, mass migration, and
armed conflict.
A committee of leading trial
attorneys, who are FDCC members,
participated in a two-hour program
addressing effective trial tactics
and strategies in a discrimination
lawsuit, focusing on compelling
opening and closing statements
and rehabilitation of a corporate
representative after cross-
examination at trial. Substantive
law committee presentations
addressed navigating liability and
coverage issues in high stakes
premises liability matters; hot
topics in class actions, multi-district
litigation, and product liability
cases; and successful arbitration of
employment disputes. Members
enjoyed a host of recreational
activities after the second day of
programing, a cocktail party in
the hotel’s Grand Hall, and dine-
arounds with friends.
The program’s third day began
with a fascinating discussion
of how corporate counsel can
manage diversity concerns in
today’s environment. The keynote
