The lens translates and prolongs the mind of the author, a nomadic mind, reaching out in pursuit – within reality itself – a caustic form, significant, stripped of every stylistic flourish and all descriptive rhetoric.
Sergey Yastrzhembskiy’s images bring us to faraway lands, most of them unexplored, precisely to give us the feeling that he is seeking to go to the roots and origin of all things. Always in search of “magical” spaces, like the cold expanses of Siberia, or the warm lands of Africa, seeking patterns and forms that are unique, that only nature can create and only the eye of a sensible and capable artist can discover.
In these years of continuous travels, with lens in hand and sometimes aboard unusual forms of flight, has gradually warmed to the idea of using a video camera. In 2008 this desire was finally sparked when he returned from a wild safari. Since then he has planned and executed 20 documentaries, dedicated to Africa and its tribes on the way of extinction. For each documentary,
Sergey Yastrzhembskiy has “stripped” himself of his own life and thrown himself headfirst into the daily life of these peoples. We see him among the last Moroccan nomads, “the Berbers”, among the bushmen of the Kalahari Desert and in Botswana, in the Himba tribes near Namibia, at the border of Angola, and still full of courage among the belligerent Surma, who live in the south of Ethiopia, at the border with Sudan, in the middle of forests in Cameroon among the pygmies.
The last episode, which has just been filmed, takes place in Benin, in West Africa, and regards the voodoo religion. These documentaries have been airing since January 23 of this year, every Saturday and Sunday on the cable TV channel Rossia 2. Success is already at the gates.
Once more, curiosity, intelligence, the spirit of adventure has brought him to be the protagonist of his life
