SBL SEASON REVIEW 2020
2020 West Coast Classic fills the void of cancelled SBL season.
Following the cancellation of the 2020 SBL season due to COVID-19, Basketball WA in consultation with all SBL clubs unveiled the all new West Coast Classic, 2020 WA State Amateur Competition.
The 10-week competition included all 12 Women’s SBL teams and all 14 Men’s SBL teams, including
regional clubs, the Geraldton Buccaneers, South West Slammers and Goldfields Giants.
The cooperation from the clubs to embrace the opportunity and navigate the financial and logistical difficulties to support the return of basketball was exceptional.
The West Coast Classic offered development opportunities for the athletes, coaches and officials while supporting their mental and physical heath during what was an uncertain time.
The WA basketball community responded to the West Coast Classic competition in a remarkable way, with crowds at capacity in stadiums throughout the season. The competitiveness on the court was second to none as young players were given opportunities in a competition with limited oversees players available.
In front of a capacity crowd for the Women’s West Coast Classic Grand Final, the Joondalup Wolves women were crowned 2020 Champions defeating the Perry Lakes Hawks - 72 to 54.
Again the following night, a capacity crowd filled the Bendat Basketball Centre to watch the Warwick Senators claim the 2020 Men’s West Coast Classic Championship, defeating the Perry Lakes Hawks - 96 to 81.
