PARTICIPATION PATHWAY
Within the participation pathway, Basketball WA has continued to grow
the sport of wheelchair basketball in WA through supporting ‘Come and Try’ events across the State, including a trial four week season of a Wheelchair Basketball League in Bunbury. BWA would like to thank and acknowledge our partners in delivering the Bunbury program:
• Rebound WA (providing Chairs)
• The Shire of Dardanup – Eaton Recreation Centre
• City of Bunbury –
South West Sports Centre
• APM Communities “Brad Scott” (organising and running the come and try days with Craig Friday from BWA)
3x3
The game of “3x3” is a new addition to the wheelchair basketball game. It is exciting and has provided another form of the game that has sparked significant interest in the local and regional com- munity.
Basketball WA, in conjunction with 3x3 Big Hustle, held a demonstration event at Scarborough beach in October 2019. The exposure of the speed and skills of the wheelchair game and athletes was well received by spectators and competitors in other 3x3 Big Hustle divisions.
Donnie Taco in West Perth also host- ed a number of wheelchair 3x3 events throughout the Summer of 2020.
The numbers attending the events at this venue in West Perth were growing each time and we look forward to this program continuing to expand in 2020.
BWA, via Craig Friday, is in talks with stakeholders in Geraldton and Bunbury about bringing 3x3 wheelchair basketball to their region.
"Quote from Brad Scott.
It’s been a great couple of months down here in the south west. Approximately 400 people used the chairs in 4 weeks. Not only did it create an opportunity for people with disabilities to play competitive sport, but it also provided an inclusive platform for positive conversation and awareness around disabilities. Which is brilliant!
As a result, I’ve been contacted by
local rec centres wanting to find out how and where they can purchase their own chairs. So hopefully we will have wheelchair sports availa"ble more frequently in the future.
We look forward to expanding this program
in other regional centres during 2020, to this end we are currently in negotiations with Collie to participate in a
“Come and Try” event.
