PLYMOUTH – Mark your calendars, everyone! Because the CADY Restorative Justice Yard Sale takes place on September 10th! CADY’s yard sale is a part of the Town Wide Yard Sale, and they’ve been participating in it for the past 5 or 6 years. Community members can consider donating their used items, and all contribu- tions are much appreciated and will benefit the CADY Restor- ative Justice Program.
For those who have not heard of CADY, it stands for “Com- munities For Alcohol And Drug- Free Youth.” CADY’s mission is to “help their local youth make healthy and safe choices by work- ing with parents, schools, youths, and communities to prevent and reduce youth alcohol, tobacco,
and other drug use and to pro- mote healthy environments and promising futures.” In 2007, CADY began the Restorative Jus- tice Program. The purpose of the RJP is to help youths ages 12-17 who have committed a first-time non-violent offense. The RJP is a court-diversion program that is a community-based interven- tion that helps high-risk youths develop real-life skills so they can steer away from committing other offenses and reclaim their future.
I had the opportunity to talk with Nicole Shedd, the Restor- ative Justice Director for CADY, and she told me all the wonderful aspects of the program. “It is a strengths and skills program. We help kids become the best pos- sible version of themselves that they can possibly be.” The pro-
gram helps these youths take re- sponsibility for what they’ve done and help them rework themselves back in the community. The RJP offers strength-based community service and skill opportunities based on what the youth is inter- ested in or curious about. Shedd told me it could be anything from what they are interested in, where their skills lie, or their career aspi- rations. Whether the kid is curi- ous about vet work or becoming a firefighter, the RJP will help them with that possibility. Also, if the youths participating in the RJP complete the program, they can have their record closed.
When asked how the RJP con- nects the youths with such sub- stantial opportunities, Shedd told me, “we really spend a lot of time getting to know the youth so we
can establish something mean- ingful for them as they participate in the program. We are extremely intentional with the way we help the kids.” The RJP works hard to make real connections with high- risk youths so they can be able to succeed as they reconnect with their community. “Our biggest goal is to help kids connect back into our communities as well as strengthen the communities.”
The RJP is definitely making a significant impact on the youths who partake. Their website states, “research says juveniles who have
successfully completed the pro- gram have decreased recidivism rates, or, rates of arrest for a subsequent offense. On average, 79.4% of youths who complete a diversion program in New Hampshire remain arrest-free one year after completing the program.
Please consider donating well- loved items to the yard sale! And for more information on CADY, their Restorative Justice Program, or other programs, please visit https://cadyinc.org/.
