beginning, McFadden did an excellent job of show- casing the lack of love be- tween them. However, as the story went on, I could see small glimpses of No- ah’s love for Claire as the situation grew dire. And by the end, I was rooting for them to fix it all in the mid- dle of those woods instead of fighting for their lives!
I can say, without a doubt, that the ending shocked me to my core. I certainly wasn’t expecting the major plot twist in the end once I found out who was behind the tragedies. One By One was eerie, thrilling, and entertaining, and it makes the perfect read to get started, taking in all the spooky elements
of the season. If you’re look- ing for a fast-paced read with spooky elements and complex characters, pick up One By One by Freida McFadden.

We’ve all been waiting for it, and it’s finally here. Spooky season! It is officially October, and it’s time to bust out the Halloween decor, the pumpkin lattes, and the hot apple cider. October always comes with a crisp atmosphere as the days get shorter and the smell of baked goods starts to fill the air. And the spooky themes break out of the box as kids gear up for their Halloween costumes. Well, there’s nothing better than put- ting someone in that fall-es- que mood with an excellent
old-fashioned spooky story, and I have one for you!
I’ve been into Freida Mc- Fadden's books recently, as I’ve found them to be typically quick and engaging reads. She sticks to a very creepy theme that always leaves the reader second-guessing every charac- ter in the book, and McFadden definitely doesn’t stray from that theme in One By One.
One By One is the story of a group of adult friends ven- turing into the woods for a much-needed rest and relax- ation getaway. However, things take a terrifying turn when their van breaks down, and group members start to go missing. Claire Matchett has been look- ing forward to this trip to get away from the stresses of work and rasing her children, and hopefully to repair her broken marriage. Only, like Claire, ev- eryone in this group seems to be hiding some dark secrets, and as they begin to be picked off one
by one, Claire starts to think whoever the killer knows each and every one of her friend’s dark truths.
This book was un- doubtedly another day-finisher. Meaning
I actually finished this
book in a day, which,
as I’ve said before, does
not happen often. The build-up of this story
was perfect as we learned
about Claire, her broken marriage, and all of her friends who are accom- panying her on this get-
away. And as soon as
their van broke down, I
flew through the pages.
This fast-paced thriller perfectly entwines sus- pense, unexpected turns,
and complex characters to keep readers on the edge of their seats.
Each character had signifi- cantly different personalities
and flaws that made every one of them interesting. I was par- ticularly interested in Claire’s strained marriage with her husband, Noah, because in the
