No One Is Alone: How Alexandria United Methodist
By Brittany amalfi
Church is Providing an Open Community
When the world becomes too difficult, some might have trouble finding some feeling of comfort. But the Church of Alexandria is doing what it can to help those people. For about ten years, the members of the Church of Alex- andria have been making prayer shawls to give out to anyone in the community who needs it. The purpose of these shawls is for anyone who might need a little pick-me-up. If someone is sad, stressed, or needs comfort, the shawls are here to provide anyone with a sense of belonging. The efforts of the church to help bring people together have been outstanding.
A pastor had started the prayer shawl tradition about ten years ago, and the members of the church never looked back. They spend their time making them because they know that they can provide some semblance of com- fort in a difficult world. Since ev-
The prayer shawls show people that they are not alone. Phyl- lis Adkins and daughter Laura Plummer, both church members, say that the shawls help people “stay in contact and uplift each other.” And truly, that is what ev- eryone needs.
The prayer shawls are for ev- eryone and not just members of the church, so if anyone needs to find a little sense of comfort, they are always available. Laura also tells me that they are mak- ing prayer squares. They serve the same purpose as the shawls; they are just smaller, so they can be portable when some people need comfort in their busy, on- the-go lives. People can stick it in their pocket, car, or bag and find it when things get a little too diffi- cult. There can be different ways to find some peace.
Phyllis and Laura have been members of the church for quite a while, and they tell me that they have seen a lot of positive feed- back from the shawls. “People
get a lot of comfort from them,” Phyllis said. If the shawls can give someone just an ounce of com- fort, then they are serving their purpose.
The Church of Alexandria has been around for a long time, and it continues to strive to keep an open community for anyone and everyone. They hold a free dinner on the first Saturday of every month, where everyone is welcome. And the church fair is coming up on August 12th. Community members know that
the church fair is not something that should be missed! There will be wonderful vendors, a bake sale, first responders, crafts, and so much more. Prayer shawls will be available at the church fair, or they can call the church at 603- 744-8104. Also, if people are in the area who want a prayer shawl and a member of the church is there, they can stop right in and get one.
