lered for them all to calm down. There was dead silence for a min- ute, but it didn’t last long. When they began acting up again, his three-year-old daughter had also had enough.
“She stood up on the seat and yelled, ‘You be QUIET! My daddy has a headache!’” Mary laughed. “I’ll never forget when he came home and told me that story.”
Haines thanked all his fellow employees for their great work and professionalism over the years and said he has no real plans for retirement. It might take a little time to get used to being home now, but felt sure he and Mary would soon find plenty of things to enjoy now that they had much more time together.

BRISTOL—After 26 years with the Bristol Police Depart- ment, Scott Haines retired in 2002. However, at the end of the 2023-24 school year, he retired once again after an additional 46 years with the First Student bus company, so his fellow workers, friends, and family gathered on June 12 to throw a surprise party in his honor.
Haines said his time with the police department and the bus company overlapped for a while when his friend Phil Dion encour- aged him to take a second job with First Student Bus Company in 1977. Haines worked part-time driving buses for many years, and upon his retirement from the po- lice department, he was named the full-time assistant manager of First Student’s Newfound lo- cation.
Newfound Area School Dis- trict’s interim superintendent Steven Nilhas said the school dis- trict was very fortunate to have someone like Haines coordinat- ing the bus routes and oversee- ing the safety of all the students they transport throughout the school year. He also thanked him for making all the tough calls on whether or not to delay or call off

New Hampton Community School Principal Ann Holloran could not attend the party but did send a note congratulating Haines on his retirement. She said she has collaborated with him for 20 years. During that time, she esti- mated that she had made at least a hundred phone calls to him for a variety of reasons and admired his ability to remain calm in try- ing moments.
“My time working with you has been pleasurable. I appreci- ate you and all you do,” Holloran wrote.
Newfound Memorial Middle School Principal Chris Ulrich also thanked Haines, saying he will miss him but wishes him a “joyful transition into retirement.”

cial memories to share from the last 46 years, Haines said there were so many great times that he couldn’t pick just one or two; he will cherish them all. His wife Mary did have one she wanted to share, however.
She said that when her hus-
band began his second job, their children were young, and she was also working. So, when he was driving a bus, he would pack up the kids and bring them along on his route. One day students on a particular route were very rowdy, she said, so he stopped and hol-
