Autumn on the lake is one of my favorite times of year. Qui- eter waters, brilliant foliage, and finally enough breathing room to tackle the projects that got pushed aside all summer. If you own a seasonal property here, October is your secret weapon for a smooth spring opening. With the water level in New- found Lake very low right now, it’s a great opportunity to spruce up your dock. Consider adding a water sealer, staining, or even renewing the decking. Recently, I stripped the decking from my 45-year-old pier dock and replaced it with beautiful ma- hogany, and sealed it with pen- etrating oil. I can't tell you how nice it will be to avoid splinters next summer!
Fall is also the right time for a tree check. Walk your prop- erty and look for limbs that are overhanging the roof, hanging heavy, or showing signs of dis- ease. A trim now is far cheaper than storm damage in January.
And then there are the mice. If you're closing up for the season, don't skip a final pest control visit. Before you go, se- cure any dry goods like pasta, crackers, and even cough drops in glass jars or metal tins. Mice will find everything. One more thing: don't leave vinegar in glass bottles over winter. They can freeze and crack, and you'll have a mess waiting for you in May. Spring will be here before
we know it! Hopefully, these tips will help make your opening
season a breeze.
