September 30, 2023, marks the 30th year of the New Hamp- shire Marathon at Newfound Lake! Beginning in 1993, the New Hampshire Marathon has been bringing people together for a rewarding day that leaves everyone smiling. The course goes around Newfound Lake in the peak of Autumn, and there’s nothing better than being im-
mersed in the foliage of New England. Surrounded by beauti- ful fall scenery, the New Hamp- shire Marathon offers a full and half marathon, a 10k, and a kid’s race.
I had the opportunity to speak to Dan MacLean, the Assistant Director at the Tapply-Thomp- son Community Center, and he had nothing but wonderful things to say about the gratify- ing day. “The atmosphere of the whole day is really upbeat,” said MacLean. “People are happy that they achieved a big goal. There are many great people involved, from volunteers, run- ners, and spectators.” Dan also informed me that his father, Fred MacLean, was on the commit- tee that got the NH Marathon started back in 1993. Talk about a full-circle moment! This event has been happening for 30 years, and that’s nothing to cast aside.
For 30 years, people have been coming from all over to par- ticipate in these eventful races, achieve goals, and give back to the community.
All proceeds from the marathon benefit the TTCC, The Circle Program for Girls, and the Mayhew Program for Boys. NH Marathon’s mission “ is to promote a world-class running event and to support area child-centered organiza- tions.” When asked about com- munity feedback, MacLean was
delighted to say, “We get a lot of positive feedback from the community. I think people really enjoy it and are happy that this whole event gives back to the youth.” And there’s no doubt that people enjoy the Newfound area. “Everyone involved really enjoys the Newfound area,” MacLean stated. “People come from all over to run these races like people from different states and even international runners.”
