I had the opportunity to go south to do some fishing while taking care of some other train- ing opportunities. Much to my dismay, the further south (south- eastern part of the country), I drove, the colder it got. When I left NH, it was a balmy 37 de- grees F, as I continued on my journey to the southern states, the colder it got, I actually thought that maybe my GPS was taking me north. When I got to Geor- gia, it was 26 degrees, so much for warm weather fishing oppor- tunities. I have been here starting on my third week and it has been just as cold and dismal as when I left. I had dreams of fishing in a tee shirt and shorts, not in heavy winter clothing, I did get a chance to go saltwater inshore fishing for Redfish and Speck- led Sea Trout, but that plan was shelved when a cold front moved

in over night and the wind was howling, not great conditions for any kind of productive fishing. Well, maybe next time.
If you haven’t already accom- plished it, winter time in NH is great for ice fishing and getting your gear ready for next spring and the promise of warmer weather and greener pastures. On those days that I have spare time, and I remember to, I break out my poles and associated fish- ing gear, lines and reels, and I re- pair damaged eyes on poles and put fresh line on my reels, after of course, greasing and lubing reels and checking for proper function. I like to have my gear ready to go for the first trip of the new year when the weather is less threatening. I guess I am getting to be a fair weather fisherman in my old age. I see fisherman on the water well into December, I have nothing but respect for that, but I guess I have lost that
zeal for the last bite of the sea- son, no matter how punishing it may be. Anywho, I digress, don’t wait until the last minute to do your preventative maintenance on your gear. I am a procrastina- tor by nature, why do something now that you can put off till the
last minute, but I do my best, when it’s convenient, to get my gear together.
As always, keep your lines tight and pass on your expertise and experience to the next gener- ation of anglers. Give the kids an activity that keeps them addicted
to a healthy pastime rather than some other unhealthy and dan- gerous activity alternative. There are far to many temptations and wrong turns for idle hands these days, as we see in the news on an almost daily basis. Have fun and good luck on the ice this winter.
