As winter starts to lose its grip, and the days get progressively longer and more temperate, for the fishing and boating commu- nity this signals that opening day is rapidly approaching. Ice out and open waters. Are you ready? Is your gear all set? Do you have everything in place and ready to go so that your first day on the water goes off without a hitch? Have you registered your boat,

are your trailer tags still good? Do you have all the required mandatory and regulatory safety equipment, is it in good shape and operable? Murphy is right around the corner and waiting to pounce. Murphy’s law states that what can go wrong, will go wrong, and it’s usually (almost always, without exception) at the exact wrong time in the exact worst conditions to wreak the optimum amount of chaos! It’s
by law enforcement and all of these things will come to fruition, so do yourself and your crew a huge favor and ensure that all of these boxes have been checked. Few things will ruin your day on the water faster than getting cited for failure of being in compliance with the law. If you are not sure what is required on your vessel in order to be in compliance, do a quick search of NH Marine Pa- trol laws and rules, chapter 270 – D. There is a wealth of infor- mation in that section, and I am willing to bet that you will be sur- prised by some of the things you will find in there. Ignorance is not a defense, and hope is not a strat- egy. Make sure you are ready for a safety stop and that you have reviewed what you can and can- not do on the waters in the state of NH and for that matter, most states. Another good point of reference is the US Coast Guard website which governs most bod- ies of water and from which most rules and regulations are derived from. In short, as good ol’ Ben Franklin once said, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.
always a good idea to take inven- tory of your equipment, espe- cially the safety equipment that is required on your boat. Not only do you have to have this equip- ment on hand but it must also be serviceable and in working con- dition. Life preservers for every- one on the boat and they must be US Coast Guard approved, sized to fit and easily accessible. Don’t overlook the fire extinguisher, it must be the right type and size, easily accessible, charged, and operable. If you plan on fishing, did you renew your license, do you have it on your person? Do you have a safe boaters license? Inevitably, at some point you are going to be safety checked
