“When they hear K9 Arro’s bark, they usually give them- selves up”. But K9 Arro, of the Bristol Police Department, was unusually quiet January 11 and not acting himself. When he vomited, Officer Kelley knew he needed help. After being rushed to Meredith Place Vet- erinary Emergency Hospital, it was found that Arro had a blockage in his stomach and small intestine. Emergency sur- gery was done by the amazing staff at MVER and they were able to clear the obstruction. After getting an internal infec- tion, that showed up days later, cleared and getting his pain management under control, it is expected he will make a full re- covery. “I’m hoping next week we can start going back to train- ing, but we’ll see.”, stated Offi- cer Kelley.
The Bristol Police Depart- ment was quick to let every- one know of the events of our 4-legged officer on their social media page, along with a re- quest for donations to help with the costs. Within minutes, posts of well wishes poured in for our furry officer with the big voice and teeth. Though, well wishes are amazing, more monetary wishes are being requested to help with the vet costs.
Arro is the only, and first, K9 of the Bristol K9 unit that started in 2016 by Officer Kelley.
Emergency Surgery Puts K9 Arro on Desk Duty
The initial cost of everything, (Arro, cruiser cage, training, and equipment) was funded by drug forfeiture. Since that time, the primary source has been dona- tions and Officer Kelley, himself.
Over the years, Arro, who is a Belgian Malinios born on March 14th, 2015 in Slovakia, has earned his spot in the ranks. He is trained in narcotics, track- ing, apprehension, obedience, building searches (for people) and article searches. “He was already about a year and a half old when I got him”, stated Ofc. Kelley. “We were both new to the Police K9 world so we both learned everything together with
the help of Castle K9s trainers and the trainers at the Working Dog Foundation.”
They learned together quickly. The very next year, in
the 2017 Town report it was stated, “Some of their (Ofc. Kel- ley and Arro) greatest achieve- ments were successfully tracking a male subject who fled from a
residence after assaulting a fe- male. They also were success- ful in tracking a suicidal female after she harmed herself and fled in the woods. They aided with the apprehension of an armed male who fled on foot. Arro has also had great success in the recovery of numerous ille- gal drugs, from search warrants for vehicles and houses. – Arro is feeling at home and has become a great part of the community.” Over the years, they have con- tinued their successful track of being an important part of the community, with police work and community work including demonstrations throughout Bris- tol.
Like every other hard work- ing civil servant, Arro enjoys his down time. When asked if Arro is “on” all the time, Ofc. Kelley responded, “At home, he’s just another one of my dogs (1 of 3). Lounges around the house, does laps outside with the other two and thinks he’s a lap dog.”
A call has gone out for dona- tions to help fund Arro’s emer- gency surgery and the following emergency visit to CAVES in Concord to find and clear the internal infection he developed after surgery. As all calls for do- nations go, nothing is too small. Checks can be made out to Bristol Police Association Attn: K9. They can be dropped off or mailed to 230 Lake Street, Bristol NH, 03222.
When asked what else would be appreciated besides ongoing monetary donations once Arro is off desk duty and back in ac- tion, Ofc. Kelley said, “Things we are always in need of is training rewards such as tennis balls, Kongs and tugs.” It was learned that K9 Arro doesn’t eat treats. He likes to tear up a toy, instead.
