January 8, 2025, marked a significant milestone for the stu- dents of Newfound Regional High School as the "Getting to Y" group kicked off the first of two fundraisers aimed at addressing mental health chal- lenges in their community. With a mission to bring awareness and support to this pressing issue, the group chose to partner with the New Hampshire Divi- sion of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI NH), a nonprofit organization dedi- cated to improving the lives of those affected by mental illness and suicide.
The "Getting to Y" initiative at Newfound Regional High School focuses on four key areas to enhance the well-being of students and the larger commu- nity, with mental health taking center stage. Recognizing the

growing prevalence of mental health challenges within the Newfound area, the group re- solved to make a tangible dif- ference by supporting NAMI NH, whose mission aligns with its goals.
NAMI NH is a grassroots organization committed to providing education, advocacy, and support for individuals and families affected by mental ill- ness and suicide. Through its network of affiliate chapters, support groups, and volunteers, NAMI NH creates safe spaces for those in need, fostering hope and building a better future for communities across the state.
"Chuck-a-Duck" Brings Fun and Funds
For their first fundraising event, the students hosted a "Chuck-a-Duck" competition during the boys’ varsity bas-
ketball game. The concept was simple but effective: attendees purchased rubber ducks, aim- ing to toss them into a target on the court for a chance to win prizes. The event was met with enthusiastic partic- ipation from the crowd, rais- ing an impressive $260 for NAMI NH.
The "Chuck-a-Duck" event really highlighted the power of community en- gagement. Local businesses were happy to support the cause, contributing a variety
of prizes to incentivize par- ticipation. Dunkin’ Donuts, Squam Lake Science Center, and Peek-a-Bowl were among the generous donors, showcas- ing the spirit of collaboration that defines the Newfound re- gion.
Looking Ahead: A Second Chance to Support
Building on the success of
their first event, the "Getting to Y" also geared up for round two of "Chuck-a-Duck" for the girls’ varsity basketball game on
critical resources to individuals and families navigating the chal- lenges of mental illness and sui- cide. Their programs include:
Educational Workshops and Resources: Offering valuable information on un- derstanding mental illness and available treatments.
Support Groups: Creat- ing safe and welcoming envi- ronments where individuals can share experiences and foster hope.
Advocacy Efforts: Work- ing to improve policies and practices that affect mental health care in New Hamp- shire.
Through these efforts, NAMI NH empowers communities to break the stigma surrounding mental illness and create path- ways to recovery and resilience.
