Among the other speakers that day was a representative from Sen. Maggie Hassan’s office as well as Congresswoman Annie Kuster’s spokesperson. Both relayed mes- sages of praise and congratula- tions for the town’s work toward net-zero energy goals and wished them well in future endeavors.
Also present for the celebration were Plymouth Selectman and State Representative Bill Bolton, fellow representatives Peter Lovett, Sallie Fellows, and Janet Lucas, and newly elected District 2 Exec- utive Councilor Karen Liot Hill.
Following the ribbon cutting, Vansant gave tours of the array and explained how it all turns sun- light into power to save taxpayer dollars for municipal operations.
rington and other project partners came out to survey the land as they began the design and construction processes.
“Everyone has done their part, and it’s been really fun to work with this team,” Vansant said. “Without the stick-to-itiveness of somebody like Grace, though, this project wouldn’t have happened.
While Barrington Power Com- pany has built many solar arrays, Vansant said the one in Plymouth was “pretty unique.”
Most large solar arrays operate on three-phase power, a type of al- ternating current used to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity. The closest three-phase electricity for this project, however was about a mile down the road therefore, bringing three-phase power over that distance became cost-prohib- itive.
That didn’t deter Barrington Power, though. Working closely with New Hampshire Electric Co-Operative, they came up with a plan to turn it into a single-phase project “with a twist.”
“Basically, what we’ve done is build 26 individual residential [solar] arrays and put them to- gether as one big array,” said Van-
sant.
From there, electrical wires,
cabinets, and other components were installed to get the entire thing up and running.
“This is the largest single-phase project in Central New Hamp- shire,” he said, adding that it wouldn’t surprise him if it was actually the largest of its kind in New Hampshire or even all of New England.
Perhaps the best news of his day was when he heard that even under partly sunny skies that De- cember day, the Plymouth array was still producing power under limited sunlight. Vansant smiled and said that it’s news such as that which helps him sleep well when one of their new solar arrays is operational.
The Plymouth Electrical Commission celebrated their new municipal solar array with a ribbon cutting on Dec. 16th. Bill Bolton, and Plymouth Town Manager Scott Weden.
