A representative from the New Hampshire Veterans Home was unavailable that night but Ouel- lette and Barton promised to make sure they receive the check soon. Plymouth Elks have a long-stand- ing commitment to the state fa- cility in Tilton. Each year, their donation is typically placed in the Residents Fund for programs and activities for the men and women who reside there. Among their many service projects are a picnic and Bingo nights they host twice a year for the residents. Barton and her husband also volunteered to take a few of the veterans to a Fisher Cats game this week.
“Working with veterans is a big part of the entire Elks organiza- tion,” she said.
Those interested in joining the Elks or learning more about all they do, can visit their website, www.elks.org, for that information and more.
Exalted Ruler Dorothy Ouel- lette and Secretary Veronica Bar- ton of Plymouth Elks Lodge 2312 were excited to present a total of $12,000 this year to six local nonprofit agencies to help them continue their services to the com- munity.
The annual donations from Elks are part of the mission of lodges throughout the country, aimed at supporting such groups in their area. This year, the na- tional organization also raised the bar for its members.
“We now have to be physically involved with the organizations, too, and not just give them a check,” Barton said.
This year, Whole Village Fam- ily Resources, Town of Plymouth Parks and Recreation, CADY (Communities for Alcohol— and Drug-Free Youth), Voices Against Violence, Plymouth Area Community Closet, and New Hampshire State Veterans Home received checks in varying amounts.
Erin Uhlman represented Whole Village Family Resource Center for the presentation and said the money will be used to help their Back to School Back- pack Drive, which helps local stu- dents prepare for the start of the new school year. Barton said the Elks have already been pitching in to help them with the drive and look forward to other ways they might be of assistance.

said they will be using the money to organize the annual Children’s Fishing Derby at Fox Pond and provide prizes for all the winners. Plymouth Elks have already been big supporters of the derby and will continue to help them weigh and measure all of the fish caught in the future.
CADY was represented by Liz Brochu this year and said the donation is greatly appreciated. “We’ve had significant budget cuts so we definitely need to continue to invest in our youth,” she said. The Elks are working closely with them to find a way they, too, can help support both the local youth and CADY in the coming months.
Tina Mulleavey of VAV said their check will help them support survivors of domestic and sexual
violence, human trafficking and bullying. In addition to running an emergency shelter, her staff provides financial aid for things such as the first month’s rent for an apartment, groceries and any other needs they may have as they remove themselves from such situ- ations. Barton said
they are still working with VAV to determine a way in which the Elks may be of service to this confidential group, but have been considering several options.
Plymouth Area Community Closet operates both the Keep the Heat On fuel assistance program as well as the Plymouth Food Pantry and representative Karen Krumemak said the money will help them with both of those pro- grams. Elks have been assisting
PACC with their Keep the Heat On Ball each February and look forward to playing an active role in the operations of the food pan- try now, too.
