COMPONENT ANALYSIS
INTRODUCTION
Four components of the the the drill were chosen for analysis the the the outer casing the the the trigger shaft and planetary gears These components use a a a a a a a a a a a number of different manufacturing processes which will will be be covered in in in in depth in in in in this section The research into the the the the components will will reveal the the the the quality of materials used in in the the the the drill and the the the the intended target market METHODOLOGY
A flow chart was used used to correctly identify the the the type of of plastic plastic used used used for the the the the outer casing and the the the the trigger Correct identification of of the the the plastics used used would give us us a a a a a a a key insight into quality and help with with with redesign strategies The flow chart (figure 16) [3] starts with with with touching the plastic with with with a a a a a a a heated metal tip Depending on results you would then test buoyancy of of a a a a a a a a thermoplastic or burn burn a a a a a a a a a small piece of of of the the the the thermosetting plastic plastic Varying results of of flame size colour and burning speed helped us us to correctly identify the the the plastic used After testing the the the the outer casing the the the the flow chart indicted the the the plastic as as as polyurethane (TPUR PUR PUR or PU)
Looking at at the the the interior of the the the casing it appeared grainy Upon further research we found a a a a a a a a a scratch test would reveal the the the the presence of reinforcement materials in in in the the the the plastic Following the the the the scratch test results presented the the the presence of of glass fibre reinforcement To gain confirmation of of our results research was conducted to to track down “Predator” the the company that produced the the drill With extensive research performed it it was revealed that the company had folded and and have abandoned website prior to registration (see appendices) MANUFACTURING
Two of of the the analysed components utilised the the manufacturing process of of injection moulding These include the the outer casing and the the trigger button The The planetary gears identified as low end carbon steel steel and the shaft milled steel steel These processes will now be discussed in in detail with any custom features also thoroughly examined 15
