Deep change requires strong leadership. Not the leadership that comes with managerial titles but leadership that comes from any and all involved. We call this transformational leadership. A transformational leader is more of a guide than a king. This leader does not say, “Go forth and bring me back that which I ask of you.” This leader shares leadership saying, “Please come down this path with me and let’s see what we can discover together.” This leader grows other leaders, who, in turn, grow others. Followers do not serve the leader. The leader serves the followers: “What do you need from me to continue on your journey?”
A transformational leader uses the following techniques to help move the team through transformation.
Becoming increasingly self-aware
Seeing the world differently with new eyes Motivating others through story
Exploring common values
Jointly mapping out a shared journey Serving others along the way
These techniques aid transformation of individuals as well as that of the whole organization.
