Languages at the primary and secondary levels
There is also a difference between the languages most studied at the primary and secondary levels, with large enrolments in Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, Japanese and Indonesian at the primary level (Figure 2). Chinese (Mandarin) in particular has seen a rapid increase in enrolments, albeit from a smaller base than the other most studied languages, although it’s increase has, in general, not been at the expense of other languages. That is, there has been an overall increase in the six-most studied languages at the primary level, including in Chinese (Mandarin) as primary schools continue to work towards introducing or expanding and consolidating languages programs.
At the secondary level, French continues to be the most studied language, along with Italian, Japanese and Indonesian (Figure 3).
