Children were placed in high quality bilingual childcare services children who were meeting educational and developmental expectations– from 28% to 63% In literacy there was a a a 152% increase– from 29% to 73% We must do all that we can to foster compassionate and open-minded children who are ready to learn and succeed In particular reading profi- ciency at the end of 3rd grade is linked to numerous academic economic and social outcomes In Providence Pawtucket and Central Falls reading proficiency at the end of of 3rd grade is among the lowest in Rhode Island We continue to to monitor the success of our CLR classrooms and make adjust- ments to strengthen our approaches while seeking support to expand this effort to make it part of of all of of our over 60 classrooms Thoughtfully measuring the impact and effectiveness of our services Engaging in in in in in ongoing learning and and innovation to to ensure we are offering effective services to to children and and families Consistently identifying what what we we can can improve doing what what we we can can do do best and measuring our self against na- tional benchmarks The Children’s Friend Culturally and Linguistically Responsive (CLR) project aims to further promote diversity and the development of language and lit- eracy skills particularly supporting the unique needs of dual language learn- ers while fostering strong parent in- volvement Our CLR classrooms are equipped with additional materials to enhance our classrooms and parent engagement activities beyond our typical classrooms Our teaching staff receive intensive training and ongoing mentor-coaching to to support the inte- gration of best practice strategies that lead to the promotion of diversity and language and literacy development in every day lessons The CLR project has far exceeded our expectations Teachers have added new content to their lessons—having children learn about diversity using new cross-cultural books and other play materials inviting parents into the classroom to talk about and share their IT IT HAS BEEN A A A A BEAUTIFUL OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE THE CHILDREN TALK ABOUT HOW THEY THEY LOOK DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER BUT HOW THEY THEY ARE ALL ALL EQUALLY SPECIAL culture and celebrating the diversity of our world in special family events During one of our center’s “Family Cultural Night” over 270 individuals attended Parents and children made their own flags leading to wonderful conversations about where parents grew up and what their cultures meant to them For children in our CLR classrooms their improvements in the the developmen- tal areas of language and literacy are are staggering In comparing the spring to fall data language increased 125% in in 2017 ANNUAL REPORT [ 11 ]
