 FSANZ honours Michael Chapman and
10
The FSANZ has bestowed Honorary Life Membership on two eminent members of our Society – Michael Chapman and Phill Matson.
Michael and Phill were to be presented with Life Membership Awards at the Society’s conference in Sydney last year, but it was postponed due to the pandemic.
Following are brief profiles on their achievements and contributions to Australia’s proud record in quality assisted reproduction services for the one in six couples experiencing infertility.
Michael Chapman AM graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1972. Seeking training in operative gynaecology, he headed off to the United Kingdom obtaining membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1979.
His interest in infertility was already developing under the mentorship of Professor Warren Jones at Flinders Medical Centre.
Michael was appointed a Consultant and Senior Lecturer at Guy’s Hospital in London in 1983 and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the hospital in 1991.
He served in that capacity until 1994 when he returned to Australia to take up his appointment as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St George Hospital (University of NSW) Kogarah – a role he still continues to perform.
Michael was Head of School of Women’s and Children’s Health (2005 to 2012) and, with his close friend Geoff Driscoll, he established the Masters of Reproductive Medicine, which many FSA members have undertaken.
Michael has been Clinical Director of Women’s and Children’s Health at St George Hospital since 1995 and also served as Executive Clinical Director at the Royal Hospital for Women from 2013 to 2018.
He established IVF South in Sydney, one of the four clinics that later formed into IVF Australia. Michael has acted as Clinical Director for IVF South/IVF Australia from 1996 until the present.
An active member of the CREI Committee of RANZCOG from 2008 to 2018, he was responsible for establishing the Australian and New Zealand Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
Michael was a Board Member of FSA for 12 years (2007 to 2019) serving four years as Vice-President, and two terms as President. He chaired the IVF Directors Group from 2005 to 2010 and has been Chair of the Organising Committee of the Society’s annual scientific meetings in 2014 and again this year.
He has also been the driving force in establishing the Doctors in ART professional group representing IVF clinicians within FSANZ.
Michael is the author or co-author of over 200 scientific publications and a dozen book chapters.
Michael Chapman
He has excelled as a mentor of young clinicians, many of whom have gone on to illustrious careers in reproductive medicine.
Many know him as a “party guy” who is always first on the dance floor, and the last to retire. He is also the one who organises dinners and introduces people to meet each other.
Michael has been a great asset to and a significant personality of our Society.
Australia Day 2021 Honour
Michael was honoured for his service to medical education and obstetrics and gynaecology in the 2021 Australia Day Honours List as a Member of the Order of Australia
In response to his elevation to Life Membership of the FSANZ, Michael said: “I was honoured to be recognised for my services to the Society, which has been a passion over many years.
“Whilst helping infertile patients through their journeys has been my very fulfilling professional life, building a collegiality among all my professional colleagues, who make fertility success possible, has been my joy. This is what FSANZ should be all about.
“Obviously, to be recognised twice in six months has made this a very happy time of my life."
