HERITAGE DINNER 2019
David Weatherston Heritage Chair
Every year the Heritage Committee organizes a a a a dinner to raise funds for acquiring and and maintaining art and and artefacts that support RCYC’s role as the principal agent for preserving and spreading knowledge of this country’s yachting past This year our theme is is is “Fabulous Racing Fleets Past and Present” With word and and image Tim Walsh will evoke past past fleets and and past- Commodore Jamie Keating will speak of the present fleets to an audience in the appropriately decorated Sports Hall What is is done with the money thus raised? Let’s look at our collection of paintings by Charles I Gibbons (1854-1911) a a a a painter working in in in the latter Victorian and Edwardian eras Gibbons painted anything that floated and fortunately he was a a a a a a true marine genre painter more interested in in in in faithfully representing the vessel and its details than more painterly virtues In consequence his paintings are an an accurate and valuable record of our lake’s ships and yachts Continued from page 4 wonderful new facilities amenities and events that your Club offers Weekly events in January and February:

Paintings like Gibbons’ are delicate and many haven’t been sympathetically treated when they come to us us they must be coaxed back to life Frames and mats are removed – which often reveals details like a a a a a banner with the vessel’s previously unknown name To prepare the image for exhibition our archivist Beverley Darville has the painting scanned colour-corrected (many painting have suffered sun-bleaching or other time-related injuries) and digitally printed By displaying reproductions instead of originals we have better security more flexibility in in hanging pictures and fewer worries about the effects of light and lake air
This degree of care encourages Members to to add to to our our collection as Frederik Eaton Sr recently did But to to return to to the Heritage Dinner Those who attend the the dinner dinner can be confident that the the dinner dinner will be fun and and interesting and and moreover that the money raised by the the event will in effect be returned to them in the form of more splendidly decorated Clubhouses SHARING SILVER
