CHEF’S GARDEN
Margaret Whitfield
On Wednesday, March 27th, the Member volunteer gardeners met at the lovely home of Margaret Whitfield to plan this season’s Chef’s Garden starting with a wonderful pot luck dinner. In advance of this meeting, Margaret Whitfield, Libby Bullock and Susan Howson met with Executive Chef Michael Russell to discuss what he would like us to grow for the kitchen. The chefs love the “fresh” herbs and vegetables which are used in the Harbourview Room.
The talented Libby Bullock draws detailed designs so that we lay workers know exactly where to plant the herbs and vegetables, including companion plants to keep our organic garden free from predator insects.
On May 11th, a hardy group gathered on the cool Saturday morning to prepare the gardens for
planting later in the month. Amongst other chores, wood chips were laid on the paths between the beds so we can walk closer to the plants to weed without treading on them or compacting the earth where they grow.
We meet on Tuesday evenings with a few coming on other evenings/days as they are available. I’m sure that Vicky Nicholson would love some company on Thursday evening. If you are interested in joining us or just having a look at how we operate, come along on Tuesday evening from 5:30pm or call Margaret Whitfield at 416.805.7510.
