We have had a

successful summer with the Island Clubhouse buzzing every weekend as Members come to enjoy the wonderful renovations While that has been happening there is much sailing news on and off the race course highlights are outlined below Be sure to take full advantage of the Island in in September as as it has been one of the best months in in recent years CORNERSTONE RENOVATIONS
It’s official: this phase of of the Cornerstone Project Construction is officially complete! Please continue to provide your input about items to be addressed Final City Clubhouse tweaks are underway for sign off in in in October coinciding with the one-year anniversary of of the the the start of of the the the project at the the the City Clubhouse On the the Island the the same will occur with our contractor continuing to to address deficiencies within one year of project initiation As with any renovation once the the construction is complete the the ‘house’ must be made a
a
‘home’ RC Hague outlines in in her column our focus to return the the soft furnishings and ‘warm the the spaces’ back up so so that we we feel at ‘home’ – albeit a
a
a
newer fresher version!
While we will share more detailed information in in time I am pleased to report that this entire project will be delivered on track in in terms of of timeline and budget It takes a
a
a
a
community of of many to achieve that feat and considering the magnitude of of the the the project and some of of the the the obstacles along the the the way we should all feel pride in our achievement and what it means for the future sustainability of our important Island home Thank you you to all Members and Staff for your ongoing support in in helping to to deliver the Cornerstone Project While a
a
a
a
a
a
small group of Members and Staff have led the change they work on behalf of of all of of us to achieve it As we now spend more time in the the new spaces and make them ‘ours’ we will need continued Member engagement to ensure the experience of the space is as as intended Please continue to provide input positive or constructive so we can ensure a
a
successful outcome ON THE WATER
While our physical assets have undergone a
a
a
a
a
a
transformation our summer sailing activity has certainly been progressing successfully as well We are succeeding on all levels with no real down time in our activities What follows is a
a
a
a
brief snapshot please continue to to monitor the weekly Hiawatha where we provide you with timely updates on all that is going on • We are excited to announce that RCYC will be developing a
a
a
a
National Next Gen Performance Hub for Ontario Ontario in in partnership with Ontario Ontario Sailing and Sail Sail Canada This effort will be coordinated with our existing racing programs and offers the opportunity for RCYC Race Team sailors sailors to to be exposed to to sailors sailors in the Next Gen program as eight year old Opti sailors all the way up to national team members will be be sailing from the same location This continuum of programming
offers benefits for mentoring coaching synergies and challenging training As the plan develops we will keep you up to date • At the 2018 Sailing World Championships RCYC Members participated in fin in four classes with Tom Ramshaw finishing 5th in in in the Finn class RCYC also had Members participating in two classes at the 2018 World Youth Championships • The 2018 RCYC Open was a
a
a
a
great success with increased participation and a
a
a
a
a
a
very lively party on on on the Front Lawn and in the Sailors’ Bar • We have had great Midweek and Club race participation Programming in in the Club-owned/supported Ideal 18 and Sonar fleets remain strong with solid growth in in our Learn to Sail programming
for adults The new Member- owned VX One fleet has been a
a
huge hit with fourteen boats actively participating in in many fleet events after a
a
a
a
standing start this year including the first VX One Canadian Championships hosted by RCYC in August Interest continues and we are confident that this fleet will grow next spring • Junior Club enrolment is ahead of last year and RCYC’s Race Team has seen growth in participation with 60 sailors currently on the team Coming up:
• At the time of writing RCYC is looking forward to hosting
the 2018 Canadian Youth Championships in August and the 2018 Moth & Waszp North American Championships in September Volunteers are always needed so please let us know if you are interested • Hot off the press RCYC has once again received an invitation and has registered for the prestigious New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup for 2019 to be raced in the new IC37 class the the boat that RCYC has selected for the the Canada’s Cup starting in in 2020 • And finally please join us as as as we close out the sailing season at the annual Last Mast Blast event on September 29th BUILDING COMMUNITY
As you know in February the Board of Directors approved and implemented an an RCYC Code of Conduct which reaffirms our commitment that every every Member and every every person employed by our Club has a
a
right to to expect the RCYC to to be a
a
a
a
a
a
safe healthy and harassment-free environment To ensure our community is is is kept apprised of of enforcement of of this Code and the types of incidents being managed in in in September we will begin to communicate regularly on incidents involving Member breaches of the the Code and the the successful resolution of these incidents by Senior Management and/or the the Board of Directors If you have any questions about this new step in the discipline process please don’t hesitate to contact me LOOKING AHEAD TO FALL AT THE CLUB
Although the Island Clubhouse and and offerings continue well into the the fall by the the time this issue is is is is published we will be looking ahead to to our return to to the City RCYC Member benefits are plenty with the Sports Swimming and Racquets Leagues and Programs ramping back up again Registration for these programs has begun and they fill up fast I encourage you to engage in all that your Membership offers Until then I I hope to see you on the the the Island enjoying the the the last few 2018 summer sunsets!
