Where Does The RCYC Fit?
Currently, the RCYC has a number of male and female sailors that are doing Olympic campaigns in single- handed and double-handed events and classes. It seems that the Laser, Radial, 49er, 49er FX, Nacra 17 and Finn are certain (or very likely) to be retained for 2024. The proposed new events may open up opportunities for mixed double-handed teams and female single-handed sailors that are too light to be
competitive in the Radial. We even know of some Members who have been seen trying (with varying degrees of success) to sail kites.
RCYC has a proud tradition of Olympic participation going all the way back to the early days of Olympic sailing. It has produced more Olympic sailors than any other club in Canada including several Olympic medalists. Former Olympian and fellow Member, Paul Henderson has been a tireless proponent of Olympic sailing and the Olympics themselves on the world stage and has served as the President of what is now World Sailing. Fellow Member Fiona Kidd is the Chair of the World Sailing Events Committee. Fellow Members Todd Irving, Sail Canada President and Karen McRae, Sail Canada Board Member are integrally involved in the Sail Canada proposal process. Mike Milner former RCYC Director of Sailing was just named High Performance Director of Sail Canada.
RCYC is monitoring the situation with keen interest as these changes could have a profound effect on our athlete development programming and our Club in the future. We will continue to update you as developments happen.
