I’m particularly proud of our regatta hosting record in 2019. Our new Race Committee Volunteer Program spearheaded by Martha Henderson and Melissa Clark, coupled with our environmentally-friendly “Gold” certified regattas as shepherded by Doug Bullock and his team were standouts. These core competencies of the Club will only improve in 2020.
And lastly, I would like to recognize our brave-super- Mom-sailor Melodie Schaffer competing in the Clipper Round-the-World Race as Watch Captain on yacht Zuhai. Remarkable.
In squash, Jeff Lurie won the Ontario Open Mens’ doubles division! In the Canadian Century Club Champs, Michael Schaffer and Andy Boright won the buddies division, while our own pro, Taylor Fawcett and his partner Seanna Keating, won the Mixed Doubles Open Division! In remarkable form, RCYC squash player Maddie Martin won the Squash Ontario U15 Gold event as well as the Ontario Closed Womens’ A division. Maddie was also competing in Canadian Junior Open in December (after writing this). The RCYC also hosted the Squash Ontario Junior Bronze tournament, crowning three new up-and-comers: Nicolas Moore (U9), James Dempsey (U11), and Hope Kelly (U13).
Also while writing this, we are holding our 15th Annual Carlton Doubles fun tournament, having also just hosted our inaugural Member-Guest Team Squash Invitational. On the fun front, you may have noticed our November
Mix & Mingle event, which like our Wednesday night drop-ins, feature the opportunity to try three racquet sports: Badminton, Pickle-ball and Table Tennis. Look forward to more Mix & Mingle and to resurrection of the RCYC Badminton Club Championship (which your writer may have won some decades ago).
Your Management Team and Board have been busy making plans for another good year in 2020. Our focus is hiring the most engaging and dedicated new Senior Managers we can find to deliver RCYC service, hospitality and programs that make our Members happy and proud.
While perhaps a distant memory by the time you read, I would like to thank all Members that attended our November 2019 Meeting of Members – your questions, comments and support were all appreciated. We have been following up on many of your points. To the questions regarding 2020 flood mitigation, we have mobilized both politically and in direct communication with our local authorities, Ports Toronto, Waterfront Toronto and with the City. On the former, we have been circulating a petition link urging all our Members to sign in support of urging the International Joint Commission to reflect our interests by returning water levels to lower, more normal, levels. Our near-term board priorities now turn to accelerating our Island clean-up, to a strategic plan review and a Member survey to help keep us on track.
Let’s make it a great 2020!
