RCYC RACE TEAM: SUMMER SEASON SUMMARY

What a a a a a a great summer our RCYC Race Team had Whether it was a a a a a a locally continentally or internationally our athletes posted great performances There are wonderful stories to to tell but unfortunately there is not enough room to include them all so here are just a a a few of the highlights:
International Competitions
Kiel Week one of the world’s largest and oldest sailing regattas was held in in Germany in in late June Robert Davis (Laser) finished 16th fin in in the intensely competitive gold fleet Noah Collinson (Laser) secured a a a a 4th place finish fin in the the silver fleet Norman Struthers (Laser) had some terrific races in fin in the Laser silver fleet finishing 87th overall Tate Howell (420) and her partner Madeline Gillis (RNSYS) placed 37th in the gold fleet out of 100 boats At 15 years of age this was Tate’s first regatta outside North America Mariah Millen (49er FX) and her partner Ali ten Hove (KYC) finished mid-fleet getting great experience Tom Ramshaw (Finn) placed 24th out of 70 boats Laser Under 21 Youth Worlds held in in Poland in in July 134 boats from 41 nations around the world competed Noah Collinson finished 43rd of 69 boats in fin in Gold Fleet and Norman Struthers finished 17th of 65 boats fin in Silver fleet 2018 Youth Worlds held in in Texas in in July and our young sailors were up against the very best from 95 nations Tate Howell sailing in in the 420 class with her crew Madeline Gillis placed 12th in in in a a a a 22 boat fleet Will Bonin sailing in in the 29er class with his crew Alec Baird from Royal St Lawrence Yacht Club placed 20th out of a a a a a 25 boat fleet Sailing World Championships held every four years is the largest global sailing competition and includes all ten Olympic fleets is the first and largest country qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games After sailing a a a a a a a a brilliant regatta Tom Ramshaw qualified Canada for a a a a spot in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics in in fin in in in in the Finn Finn class finishing in in fin in in in in 5th place against 90 Finn Finn sailors from 42 Nations Continental Regattas
At the North American Laser Championships our sailors were outstanding Brenda Bowskill won the Laser Radial class winning seven of ten races Spencer Leman finished fin in in 2nd place fin in in the Laser 4 7 fleet after a a a a a very hard-fought battle Only four points separated
first and second Robert Davis finished 6th fin in the Laser Full-Rig The Optimist 2018 North American Championships held in Mexico attracted 149 entrants from fourteen countries This year the RCYC had two sailors competing – sisters Carling Carling and Lindsay Davies Carling Carling the top Canadian finished 45th fin in in Gold Fleet and Lindsey finished 50th fin in Silver fleet The 420 World Championship took place in Newport Rhode Island the first time on North American waters in in two decades Tate Howell and Madeline Gillis competed in the 52 boat Women’s Division In the 29er US Nationals held in Maryland Galen Richardson and Jake Adair placed 2nd Local Regattas

Angus McTavish and Georgia Johnston all had podium finishes during the summer In the the Laser Fleet Noah Collinson finished 3rd in fin in the the Canadian Youth Championships Colin Davies won Ontario Championships at Fall CORK and Spencer Leman had first place finishes fin in every Laser 4 7 regatta held in Canada In the 420 Fleet Tate Howell and her crew were top finishers at Canadian Youth Champs In the 29er Fleet Galen Richardson and Jake Adair William and and Samuel Bonin Aiden Chiu and and Walker Moffat all had podium finishes around Lake Ontario and Quebec Finally in in the the near future Members will be be given the the opportunity to help financially support our Race Team Athletes We encourage you to help our our sailors as they represent our our Club our our country and take on the world!
