municate the message of “too much too fast” to media, government and other stakeholders.
The impacts on our industry and the economy will be staggering. Findings from an independent economic impact analysis by the Canadian Centre for Economic Analysis (CANCEA) indicate:
• A $23 billion hit to business over two years
• 185,000 jobs at risk; 17,300 in food- service and accommodation alone— more than any other sector
• Increased de cits at all three levels of government with municipalities taking a half billion dollar hit—which will result in higher taxes
• A 50 per cent increase to in ation and a cost per household of $1,300 more for consumer goods and services
RESTAURANTS CANADA ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
• A member impact survey
• Call-to-action
• Storycollection
• Meetings and discussions with
politicians and ministers, and the
premier’s top advisors
• Participation in all 10 days of hear-
ings across the province. In fact, our industry had more representation than any other at the hearings
There is more to do, we need your help! Restaurants Canada is taking the lead, and funding up to 50 per cent of this campaign, but we need all members
to kick in. We must sustain pressure
on government and in uence MPPs
in targeted constituencies to negoti-
ate mitigation that is in line with the labour-intensive nature of the industry, and the disproportional impact these increases will have on our membership. Ultimately, we want to send a strong message—to not only the government of Ontario, but to other jurisdictions also— that reckless minimum wage increases won't buy elections.
