THE ‘SPACE TO SPOON’ EXHIBITION
Space technology might seem far out, but in reality, space technology plays a significant role in foodservice. The Space to Spoon exhibition was developed by the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum (CAFM) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). Space innovations are increasingly present in our everyday lives as well as in agricultural practices.
IMPACT ON FOODSERVICE & INFLUENCE ON GLOBAL FOOD PRICES
The Space to Spoon exhibition will be at RC Show 2018! At the very heart of INNOVATION UNLEASHED, the exhibition demonstrates how RADARSAT2 satellite data is collected, interpreted and used to impact the food on our plates. This exhibition feature hands-on models, videos, photos and satellite images, supported on the Speaker Stage with Dr. Irwin Adam’s presentation on the Future of Food and Eating.
Innovation is powered by research. Earth observation is used to monitor the current state of crops through the growing season, and satellite data is used alongside climate data to forecast the anticipated yields. This provides in- formation for Canadian agriculture, but Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) also works with other countries to feed in this information and create monthly global assessments of agricultural conditions. This information is used to reduce the volatility of global food markets (helping farmers, foodservice operators and consumers), and also help food security organizations and food insecure nations anticipate potential food shortages at the early stages. Canada is one of the leaders in these initiatives.
