Measuring Sticks
A correctly measured stick enables the user to maintain an upright posture with the elbow slightly bent.
Body weight is taken through the stick as the
user pushes down on it when walking.
Using a walking stick of the correct height
is imperative. When measuring, the handle should rest on the floor against a relaxed arm. The stick should then be adjusted or trimmed to the crease of the wrist.
Where two walking sticks are needed, the length should be slightly longer as they will be used ahead of the body when walking.
Ramp Selection Guide
When choosing a ramp, the length, and therefore the angle of the ramp, depends upon:
The height to be raised
The type of wheelchair or scooter
The weight of the wheelchair or scooter and the user The strength of the helper or user.
As a general guide, a raise of 1 in 12 is suggested when the user is seated on the wheelchair or scooter. For loading an unmanned wheelchair or scooter into a vehicle, a higher gradient can be used, but this should not exceed 1 in 3.
