 FTHOUGHTS ON STURGIS by Schultz
and the Oasis Bar in Sturgis and the Back Porch in Spearfish.
or me, the ride out to Sturgis and the time spent there is my annual Christmas and New Year’s – all in one! When in Sturgis, plan for a lot of riding – everyday! You can go in any direction and fine some great sights and rides. To the west is Devil’s Tower. To the north is Belle Fourche. To the south, Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial. To the east is the incredible Badlands. And this is just a few of the spots you have to see. There are all kinds of businesses that welcome riders along all of these routes. I always hit one of two of the Jackpine Gypsy Motorcycle Club events. Main Street is always fun with lots of places to visit like the Easyrider Bar, the Oasis Bar and the Side Hack. East of the town is the Full Throttle Saloon – they’ve built a great place to hang out!
For Food – Of course, there are
lots of choices. But the number one
place for breakfast in Sturgis contin-
ues to be at the Grace Lutheran
Church at 106 Sherman Street, one block
south of Main Street. The food is excellent, and the staff makes you feel right at home. It’s always hard to say goodbye when leaving Sturgis to head home. The Millstone Restaurant in Spearfish is right off the second exit westbound on I-90. They also go out of their way to make you feel welcome, no matter what time you come in – they’re open 24 hours! They serve breakfast all day but never mind that, the homemade pies are enough to bring most people in. Their prices DO NOT change for the rally! My last stop is always here when I leave Spearfish to head east back to NH.
First things first - Safety Facts:
Watch the weather; it can turn on you in minutes and in a bad way. Don't ride with a buzz, wait it out. Keep two feet on the ground at all stop signs. Stay away from the center line. Don't speed and ALWAYS watch for animals, day and night.
For Supplies of all Kinds – When you need to shop for food, Grocery mart remains the best grocery store in the Sturgis area. They are open early and stay open until 11pm with a wonderful staff and a real welcoming feel to the store. If you’re in the Badland and near Interior, the Cowboy Stop is a great place to take a break, gas up and grab a snack and a cold one.
Camping/Lodging – You're on your own with the hotels – But for camping, my camp of choice is Chris’ Campground, it has been my home for the Rally for over 10 years now, and I love my campfire, which you can’t have if you camp anywhere in Meade County. If you don’t need a campfire (which makes no sense to me...), I would recommend staying at Full Throttle. There are also plenty of campgrounds all around Deadwood, Lead and Spearfish. If you’re camping in Spearfish, the Back Porch is a very cool place to hang out.
Special Note: Over at Buffalo Chip, Michael Lichter will be hosting one of his world-famous photography exhibits. These are always first class and you will feel like you are seeing something special. This year’s exhibit is Mettle Motorcycles with Moxie. Michael is one of those riders that makes friends wherever he goes, and his photography is the best -check it out!
For Watering Holes – Three great ones are the Side Hack
Ride safe and live to enjoy! H
