PRIMARY SCHOOL

             REDEVELOPMENT

                OVERCROWDING

                The Structure is a 17.6m X 7.8m footprint.
There are 7 separate classrooms accommodating
Pre-Primary Students to class 6 Students.
The average classroom is 3x4m wide. Benches are
used in order to allow for more students in the space.
                The younger classes i.e. Pre-Primary 1, Pre-Primary
2 and the Nursery share spaces with Classes 1 and 2
sharing a space. Classes 3 - 6 are in respective spaces.
The number per class range from 15-18 in
younger classes and 30-46 in the upper classes.
                                                                   Interior of Classroom

                POOR INFRASTRUCTURE

The classrooms have corrugated iron sheet walls with
openings cut out for ventilation. The Iron Sheets are
dilapidated in some areas. The Iron sheet walling is
precariously hanging supported by inadequate timber
members. Timber post support timber rafters that carry a
corrugated iron sheet roofing that is susceptible to water
penetration leading to flooding during the recent rainy season.
Finally the floor is a mix of Hardened Rock that
was not leveled creating an undulating surface.

                                                                   Northern Facade of temporary building

                NO BATHROOMS

The school relied on a goodwill organization ‘fresh Life’
that provides toilet services at a cost. This has become
unsustainable as the school is unable to pay for emptying
of the toilets causing the organization to lock the toilets.
Students are at times forced to help themselves on streets and
alleyways compounding the sanitation problem in the slum.

                ACCESS TO EDUCATION

The school continues to operate knowing there are still a
large number of children unable to access primary/secondary
education and are driven by this severe reality.

                                                                   Southern Facade of temporary building
