What is Letters & Sounds?
Letters and Sounds is a high-quality systematic synthetic phonics programme, designed specifically to raise reading and spelling standards, in response
to international research into effective teaching practices. It focuses on learning single sounds (phonemes) rather than, for example, having children try to recognise whole words.
Letters & Sounds - quick guide to the 6 Teaching Phases
PHASE SIX
Focuses on spelling and rules.
Second year of School
PHASE FIVE
Alternative spellings and pronunciations are taught. A further 25 tricky words learnt for reading & spelling.
Next 30 weeks of school
PHASE FOUR
Blend and segment longer CCVC and CVCC words such as s-t-o-p and j-u-m-p. Reading a further 14 tricky words and spelling 12 previously learnt.
PHASE ONE
Pre-reading activities, discriminating & articulating sounds; rhythm and rhyme.
Preschool
PHASE TWO
19 letters of the alphabet and 1 sound for each. Reading 7 tricky words. Blending, segmenting and reading simple captions.
First 6 weeks of school
PHASE THREE
Remaining 7 letters of the alphabet and one sound for each. Graphemes such as ch, oo, th representing the remaining phonemes not covered by single letters. Reading a further 18 tricky words, sentences and questions.
