South China Tiger, China, 2015 Joel Sartore This image came about thanks to a PBS special we filmed called, RARE, Creatures of the Photo Ark. The producer/director spoke Mandarin and worked for months to get permission allowing me to paint one wall black at the Suzhou South China tiger breeding center, part of the Suzhou Zoo in China. The tiger was a female. Massive and made of muscle, she was very cautious...and a bit irritated. Fortunately, she decided to sit very near my light sources on the other side of the wire of her off exhibit space, which lit her beautifully. After just a few minutes, the shoot was over, the door was opened to her outdoor enclosure, and she bounded outside again into the summer sun.
