COULD THIS BE LOVE?
Excitement is mounting around Palm Beach Zoo following the impending courtship
of Api, the daughter of their female Malayan tiger Berapi, and the Zoo's male Malayan tiger, Kadar. Api joined the Zoo in January 2018 as part of a cooperative breeding pro- gram with other accredited Zoos around the country. She lives in the Kimelman Tiger River habitat sponsored by Braman Motorcars. The hope is that she and Kadar will fall in
love and start a family of their own.
A recognized leader in Species Survival Plan (SSP) breeding programs for Malayan tigers, the Zoo was last home to tiger cubs in 2011. This was when Berapi gave birth to three male Malayan tiger cubs, Jaya, Bunga, and Penari. Each birth is signi cant as there are fewer than 250 Malayan tigers left in the wild.
"Palm Beach Zoo thanks lead corporate sponsor Braman Motorcars Palm Beach & Jupiter for their multi-year commitment which helped us double the size of the original exhibit, as well as, the amount of behind-the-scenes space for tiger housing. Braman's ongoing support of the health and wellness, education, and daily oper- ations of the three Malayan tigers that call Palm Beach Zoo home, is pivotal in helping the Zoo expand our role as Malayan tiger ambassadors."
Did You Know: Sounds and Communication
Malayan tigers communicate through an array of vocalizations, including chu s, moans, growls, and roars. Scent marking is another prime method of non-visual and non-auditory communication between two tigers. See if you can make out the sounds during your next Zoo visit!
