our host at their recommendation. It’s was spectacular, the conversation centred on the development of this region, with Nuno telling me that within a 50km radius the biggest business is furniture manufacturing. This is why he designs everything on his projects, not just the interior, but the lamps, fans, chairs - everything. He then has it locally manufactured by artisan craftsmen with top quality materials all carefully selected (with an ethical and environmental tick) by Nuno himself. So next time you get into your room in boutique hotel the chances are you will be sitting on a Stabord chair.
By the time we get to dinner we are climbing the steps of a Michelin starred restaurant just outside the city centre, which he explains the same owner has bars, restaurants and deli’s on both sides on the street. The building is covered in a yellow mosaic similar in colour to french mustard, with an Art Deco design in each tile. It looks fantastic from the steep cobbled road. We are seated in the corner, maybe they know we are going to be a loud table, and we order yet more wine. This time it is another Portuguese Red, a 2013 Cartusca Evora, this is our house wine when we summer in the Algarve with our friends at their family villa and we love it. The cuisine is a mix of Mediterranean and Asian, so we opt for sushi to keep it light.
