114When Ferrari introduced the FXX program in 2005 as a pure track day version of the Enzo, it was not road legal and you didn’t get to keep it in your garage. Ferrari transported the car, with a support crew to various locations around the world… and you paid well over a million pounds for the privilege. A decade later and the concept has been adopted with great success by most of their contemporaries. The latest to enter the fray was Aston Martin with the introduction of the Vulcan project, although their program was a little more customer friendly, you actually get to keep your own car in your own garage. So when we were invited to the second Vulcan customer event at Silverstone we were naturally quite excited.Launched at the Geneva motor show in 2015, the Vulcan is a high performance track only car, it’s AM V12 800bhp, engine and Xtrac 6 speed sequential box with magnesium torque tube and carbon fbre prop shaft connecting it to a limited slip differential are all bread from Aston Martin’s extensive racing program. The complete package for those lucky enough to own one of the 24 Vulcans at around £2 million each is wrapped up in an Aluminium Alloy and Carbon fbre monocoque body shell. The interior features an integrated FIA compliant roll cage, both driver and passenger get full carbon FIA race seats curtesy of Recaro which, unlike some others (Ferrari) are adjustable, as well as the pedal box. You have a race type multi function steering wheel and are fed your data via a Cosworth Omega dash with download port so you can view all the data between runs. The Vulcan records both in car cameras and data analysis as part of the driver training program.
