There are certain races that transcend just being a race event and become more of a destination, when their history, reputation, location or glamour actually overtake the cars racing and it becomes the stuff of legend.
The 24 Hours of Le Mans is one such event, this year was the 85th race in its long and interesting history. It’s a race the people go to in groups, if Monaco is the race for glamour and style then Le Mans is the race for camaraderie and friendship. Car clubs organise runs to Le Mans, manufacturers invite their clients to drive down together, then camp or in the case of companies like Bentley “glamp”. The chateau’s surrounding the area are booked years in advance. It is well and truly on the petrol head social calendar.
Unfortunately for us our schedule did not permit a leisurely drive down in a convoy of like-minded people in their lovely cars, maybe next year... no ours was a mad dash through the night in the Range Rover with Jenny crashed out across the back seats and me grabbing and hours sleep on the Eurotunnel then pulling over early morning for
