METAL GURUChris Renwick looks at the most collectable car in the world...I was asked by the editor of this magazine, Craig, to write an article about the legendary GTO Ferrari, and if I knew where they all were? So from my database here is a recent list and a brief history of the market. Ferrari produced a grand total of 36 250 GTOs from 1962 to 1964. Of those, thirty three were Series l’s and three were Series ll’s which had different body shapes, although two of the series l cars were later rebodied to the series ll body shape. There are three 330GTO’s (4 litre engines) but I’ll write about them another time. The 250 GTO’s were originally built to compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and other high profle European races. Subsequent models were sold to consumers with a base price of $18,500. That’s the equivalent of $145,000 today. Over the next several decades, GTO prices fuctuated from an all-time low of $2500 in 1969 to $48k in 1975, $180k in 1980, $300k in 1983, $500k in 1984, to $650k in 1985. 56
