evenings they have a drum circle and fire dancers.
For an authentic South African experience, visit Potluck Boskombuis.
With wonderful views of the Truer River (where you can swim), there are only a few dishes on the menu, all aimed at carnivores so vegetarians will go hungry. Think steak, boerewors and potjiekos. Drinks are served in tin cups and the selection is limited. There is no running water or electricity, which means it’s only open until 3pm and you’ll need to use the long-drop when your bladder calls.
Visit Riders Rest Pub and Grub on the main drag where locals and bikers congregate. A dim interior, and the smoke-and-beer atmosphere gives it its lekker Seth Effriken flavour.
Fine dining calls at Kruger’s Gold Restaurant on Eagle’s View Eco Estate. Coq au vin, slow braised lamb and Thai-style fish and prawn curry will entice. For more relaxed dining they have a wood-fired pizza oven.
SHOP
There are a number of curio stalls and gift shops aimed at tourists in Graskop. The biggest is Delagoa African Arts & Crafts. They offer woven baskets, beaded jewellery, post cards, handpainted ceramic crockery and souvenirs. The Bovril and Marmite stools are fabulous.
For lovely handwoven silk scarves, shawls, bedding and duvets, head over to Africa Silks Weavery and Showroom on Louis Trichard Street. These silk products are made by previously unemployed women from Bushbuckridge who work for the Iterlileng Project – a joint venture that creates jobs for women to earn an income without having to move away from their children to bigger cities.
Get the best beef biltong at Delinka’s Biltong Deli. The shop is packed with local foodstuffs including ostrich and zebra paté and Gat Brand Mampoer, which comes in a test-tube with hot chilli.
Treat yourself to handmade Belgian chocolate from Shautany Chocolatiers. Try the chocolate shot, messy but delicious.
