SPACES
Floating on air
Where: Hazyview.
What: Situated on the highest point of the owner’s farm, Summerfields, the house literally grows from the mountainside, allowing for 360-degree views of the farm’s plantations, the Sabie Valley and the escarpment. It has a double volume ceiling and an interesting slanted roof with expansive glass skylights. The owners did not want columns obscuring their view, so special thought was given to the design and building of the roof, which appears to float above the patio. Open plan rooms combine wood, glass and concrete and striking stone walls feature heavily. Sliding doors on the upper floors disappear completely into the walls, opening up the space onto a large patio. Handcarved wooden podiums divide the kitchen and living areas. The architecture is very modern and striking. To offset this, the interiors are quite causal and toned down and are home to a mix of antiques and family heirlooms. Muted colours and natural fabrics echo the natural stonework and soften the strong, architectural lines while silver collections, a walnut armoire, worn leather chairs and chandeliers infuse warmth and character throughout this understated abode.
