“Titan”
Symphony No. 1 Mozart Symphony No. 1, “Titan“ Mahler
Mozart and Mahler were both known for performing and conducting at the time of their first symphonies. Mozart, a child prodigy, toured Europe playing for royalty, and Mahler was a well known conductor who would go on to conduct major orchestras of Europe and the New York Philharmonic.
Mozart’s Symphony No. 1 was written in 1764 when he was just eight years old. This simple but melodic three movement work was the first of over 40 symphonies Mozart wrote in his lifetime.
Mahler wrote his first symphony, the “Titan,” in 1888 while working in the Leipzig Opera as a kapellmeister. The orchestra is larger than a classical orchestra, doubling the winds and brass. This makes for a brilliant and full sound, especially at the end of the symphony.
